The sibs pun on “cowabunga”, which has an interesting history: Originating in the ancient Native American phrase “kwa bungu”, its modern incarnation started as one of several nonsense exclamations made by the character Chief Thunrthud on the classic kids’ TV show Howdy Doody. From there it made its way into Californian surfing terminology in the 1950s, and cemented its place in pop culture during the ’90s as a catchphrase on The Simpsons and, in particular, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
